Our Purpose

On the Same Page is a summit to support systemic change in the New York State Educational System through strategic dialogue and action on family involvement as a catalyst for closing the achievement gap in Title I schools. EPIC – Every Person Influences Children, the New York State Parent Teacher Association, and the New York State Parental Information & Resource Centers (PIRC) have partnered to host this second annual summit. 

 The achievement gap for children in Title I schools in New York State is well documented. NCLB, Title I, and the NYS Board of Regents outline policies which require and support parent involvement as a way to help close the achievement gap, as well as request schools and agencies to work together toward this end. The research basis for parent involvement as an effective method for helping close the achievement gap is well documented. Although there are positive parent involvement efforts in districts throughout New York State, recently adopted policies and implementation plans of the NYS Education Department necessitate more comprehensive collaborative efforts. Suggested efforts include broad action to advance parent involvement as a method for closing this gap. This summit and intended future annual summits will be an impetus for this initiative.

 At last year's summit, over 100 key New York State education and parent involvement leaders convened to examine parental involvement as a key instructional strategy for closing the achievement gap, to assess the current environment, and to share opportunities for strategic advancement of optimal parental involvement. Action Teams were formed to address specific areas outlined by the Board of Regents Policy Statement on Improving Student Achievement through Parent and Family Partnerships, as well as the NYS Education Department Implementation Plan. Summit participants continue to contribute to their Action Teams as this year's summit approaches, pursuing positive outcomes in implementing the Regents Family Engagement Policy.
